A Happy New Year and how are you everyone?
Recently, here and there, there have been a lot of people who are coughing, or complaining about sore throats.
Let's introduce a drink, which is effective against coughs and sore throats as taught to me by my mother.
First, cut a Japanese radish into round slices and then, divide each slice into four from its center. After this, pour some starch syrup (sold in nearby supermarkets and such like-it's all right for that!) onto the pieces.
After a while, liquid appears from this mixture.
You drink it by gargling it so as to moisten your throat.
If you're not very bad, your throat will be better in no time at all.
Please try it by all means.

Quote:Thank you for that good information.
They say sweet things are good for sore throats, but I'm interested in that drink which contains raw radish juice.
I will try it, the next time I get a sore throat.

Good afternoon rame-san and everybody!
Quote:Oh! It 's the first time to hear about this.
I have a weak chest and if I get a cough, it may continue for several months.
Absolutely, I will try, too. I already have starch syrup, which I bought to make KURIKINTON (a dessert made from chestnuts and sweet potatoes)
Can you get a lot of liquid from this or is it equivalent to say a whisky-glass full?
I drink something made from Chinese kumquat or boiled sweet karin (Chinese quince) when I have a cold
I hear putting spring onion around your neck is effective, but I have never tried it.
Thank you for telling us of such a unique drink for colds.

Hallo rame-san and everybody!
You made it from starch syrup and Japanese radish, didn't you say?
In my case, it was made from honey and Japanese radish, but I dont remember who taught me this, as it was made on the spot, and even if you did it after you caught a cold, it was still effective.

Hallo Karei-san, rame-san and everybody.
Quote:Oh, you use honey instead of starch syrup when you make such a drink?
"Sweet" and "It is easy to drink" are the two common features.
Quote:Well, there are always radishes in any home.
Since honey or starch syrup can be kept, it is better to get this beforehand.

Good afternoon, rame-san
My handle name is Shinchan and I have just joined this BBS.
This is a nostalgic drink for me as it reminds me of my mother.
She was born in Meiji 38th (1905) but has now passed away.
I often suffered from bronchitis when I was a child.
When I had a very bad cough, my mother would made such a drink from starch syrup and radishes, which she would cut thinly and then put in a wide-mouthed bottle. After one night, she would give me this sweet and bitter drink.
I deeply appreciate my mother as I am still healthy today.

Hallo Shinchan and welcome to this board.
Quote:Often, I had bronchitis, when I caught a cold.
When we were young there were no antibiotics, so we used a drink like this or liquid from boiled black beans when we caught a cold.
Oh! I recall that there was a sweet cough syrup called Chimitushin in our childhood.
